Home owners urged to prepare for storm season

Master Electricians Australia has today issued a home owners checklist to help get people and their properties ready ahead of storm season.

Andrew Bailey from Master Electricians Australia said there were a number of simple steps home owners could take to protect their personal safety, preserve electrical equipment, and deal with potential damage to the home’s electrical system.

“While people are obviously keen to protect valuable material items, you need to look after your personal safety before you worry about replaceable electrical items,” said Mr Bailey.

“We want to warn home owners not to attempt do-it-yourself repairs on electrical appliances. It’s imperative to always get storm-damaged appliances checked by a professional.

“Performing risky DIY storm repairs could save a few dollars, but cost you or a loved one their life.”

When thinking about how to protect sensitive electrical appliances initially, it’s important to stay one step ahead of the dangerous storm season.

“Next time an electrician is at your home, ask about having lightning protection installed in the switchboard to protect all appliances. A small investment in surge protection could save you thousands of dollars,” said Mr Bailey

Master Electricians Australia also advises people to unplug sensitive appliances, such as computers and TVs, and disconnect the telephone and TV antenna before the storm arrives. People are reminded not to use equipment directly connected to electricity, including the stove, during a severe storm.

In the worst case scenario of a lightning strike resulting in extensive damage, fixing the electrical system is often more complicated than most people think.

“If the wires have been torn down in a black out, most houses will require internal repairs before the power can be reconnected.  In those cases, home owners need to contact an electrician before the distributor is called out, as your electricity distributor will be unable to assist until the wiring is fixed,” said Mr Bailey.

“The electrician will then liaise with the distributor to ensure the power is reconnected as quickly and safely as possible.

“We strongly advise against going outside to check the damage before an electrician arrives, especially during a storm, as fallen power lines are easily concealed and can be deadly.”

If you suffer storm damage, Master Electricians Australia can connect you with a local electrical contractor.  Call 1300 889 198 or use the online electrician booking system and an accredited electrician will provide urgent assistance.
