Master Electricians Australia has today urged homeowners to check a vital part of their solar electricity systems, following an urgent recall due to parts that may overheat and catch fire.

Avanco and PVPower branded DC solar isolators have been recalled by the Queensland Government as a result of safety concerns. The products are defective as they have an internal fault that leads to overheating and fires. They have been installed on some systems since January 2012.

MEA chief executive Malcolm Richards said homeowners should check their solar installations to see whether they have these components installed, and if so they should follow the shut down procedure to turn them off.

However, Mr Richards warned home owners not to put themselves in danger.

“We urge homeowners to quickly determine if they have either of these products installed in their homes as the DC Isolators may overheat and cause a fire, and the switches could cause a deadly electric shock,” Mr Richards said.

“But please do not climb on to the roof or interfere with electrical fittings. If you are not able to safely turn off the system, you should contact an electrician or your solar installer for advice.”

Master Electricians Australia has published a home owners’ fact sheet with further information on how to identify whether you have a defective product, and what to do next.
