Townsville shines as Master Electricians Australia unveils North Qld’s best sparkies
Townsville firms have scooped the pool at the Master Electricians North Queensland Excellence Awards for 2018, taking out seven of the eight awards categories.
Electrotek Qld collected four awards at today’s presentation ceremony – Commercial Project of the Year for installing lighting, power and data in a cutting-edge medical hub, while its personnel took out the Women in Contracting Award, the Tradie of the Year and the Master Electrician of the Year.
Fellow Townsville contractor, Horan & Bird, was awarded Residential Project of the year for the Electrical, Data, Air-conditioning, Solar and Battery Storage of the new multi-story house and wharf, while its employee Naomi Burke was named the Legrand Apprentice of the Year.
Townsville-based Minelec was awarded Industrial Project of the Year for a major mine overhaul, while Mackay’s Linked Group Services received the Energy Efficiency Award for building its own innovative off-grid commercial solar power plant, mounted across several buildings.
MEA CEO Malcolm Richards congratulated all the award winners and recognised the high calibre of entries.
“North Queensland is clearly very well served by members of Master Electricians Australia,” Mr Richards said.
“Each and every one of these North Queensland winners has upheld the extremely high standards with regards to quality, safety and integrity that is expected from all Master Electricians,” Mr Richards said.
“MEA has been astounded by the high calibre of entries received in 2018 and it is testament to the professionalism of many individuals in the industry, as well as the innovative electrical projects that are currently taking place.
“These winners will help lift the bar even higher for all Master Electricians members, and the wider electrical contracting industry. And it’s their customers – whether businesses or private individuals – who reap the benefits of an electrical contracting industry that is constantly striving for excellence.”
All eight winners will now go on to the compete in the National Master Electricians Excellence Awards. The results will be announced at a gala dinner in Brisbane on November 24.

Commercial Project of the Year – Electrotek QLD – David Corkery
What the judges said:
The Woman’s X-Ray Clinic Townsville included the complete new fit out of existing top floor of JCU Townsville. All areas were specifically designed for medical technologies such as body protected areas. The stand out features included the energy efficient lighting and control and the high-end fibre optic backbone network system. The project was delivered on time and within budget with minimal defects. Well done Electrotek.
Women in Contracting Award – Maria Gianoulis – Electrotek QLD
What the judges said:
Maria exudes confidence in her knowledge and adds value to her employer spanning from WPH&S business and teaching. Maria enjoys the multifaceted areas of work on a daily basis.
Residential Project of the Year – Horan & Bird – John Horan
What the judges said:
Horan & Bird’s Residential home included a new form of technology for home Automation. The stand out features included the off-grid capability with remote monitoring and voice activation automated System using wifi wireless technology. All this can be controlled from anywhere using your smartphone.
Legrand Apprentice of the Year – Naomi Bourke – Horan and Bird
What the judges said:
Naomi is an enthusiastic and motivated electrical apprentice who will make a fantastic tradesperson. Naomi is dependable, honest and patient.  Dependability is one of the most important characteristics of being an electrician. When Naomi is given a job it is completed correctly, safely and in a timely manner.
Industrial Project – Minelec Pty Ltd – Mathew Richardson
What the judges said:
Capricorn Copper Mine Refurbishment Works is located North of Mount Isa. The scope was to execute all E & I work required to bring the plant back into operational condition as well as perform upgrades and construction of new sections of the plant. The primary achievement was completing the scope to the customers satisfaction. The diverse scope contained most installation aspects and was completed in one of the harshest environments known. Well Done Minelec.
Energy Efficiency Award – Linked Group Services – Jason Sharam
What the judges said:
Jason and his team designed and constructed an innovative, energy efficient and completely sustainable off-grid commercial complex – the Linked Powerhouse. The Powerhouse consists of solar mounted on various buildings throughout the complex, including the new Linked Solar Carport, the Eco-Port which features an EV charging station.
The Project incorporated many energy efficient products such as geothermal air conditioning, building management and LED Lighting to reduce and manage the load. The complete project was carried out in-house by the Linked Team under Jason’s direction. This energy project of the year encompasses the next generation technology. Thanks Linked for such a successful project that should inspire others in Energy Efficiency.
Electrician Tradie of the Year – Panayioti Gianoulis – Electrotek QLD
What the judges said:
Panayioti (Pana) is a highly motivated young man who strives to apply his knowledge and experience to his work and continually wants to learn, in what is an always evolving industry.  He applies himself 100 per cent each and every day to get his work done and provides support to the apprentices on a daily basis. Pana is currently engaged as a Project manager for Electrotek in South East Qld and believes that it’s important to work hard but it’s always good to have a laugh with the boys as this helps to motivate and keep up morale.
Master Electrician of the Year – David Corkery – Electrotek QLD
What the judges said:
David created Electrotek 8 years ago and has built a successful company employing team members in multiple locations and servicing northern and southern Queensland; he is looking to duplicate this successful business model and move into NSW. He is a passionate advocate for delivering a service to clients that represents the values and culture present in the business, and likes to provide a team environment that supports growth and opportunities for career progression, he is also very supportive of education for his team in specialty and technical fields.
Electrotek under David’s Direction prides itself in be able to complete complex control projects on time, within budget and most importantly having a satisfied customer. Well Done David.
