Urgent warning of fire risk to Australian homes from unsafe solar components
Master Electricians Australia has issued an urgent warning to homeowners about serious fire risk following the recall of a Salzer Brand DC isolator – a key component of home solar power installations.
Two suppliers have issued an urgent recall and the Queensland Government has placed an immediate ban on the sale and installation of Salzer DC Isolators with the model number DCLB232. These are also known as IPV40E and IPV40ES.
Master Electricians Australia CEO Malcolm Richards said the danger presented by the failed components was real, and could potentially result in a house fire if not addressed.
“If you’ve had a solar system installed in recent years, there’s a chance that it may include one of these recalled DC Isolators,” Mr Richards said.
“Under no circumstances should you try to assess the equipment yourself. We recommend getting in touch with your installer, and asking whether Salzer brand DC Isolators have been used on your premises.
“If they have, or if the supplier is unable to say, you should insist that they physically visit your property to check whether your DC isolator is subject to recall.
“If you can’t arrange an inspection, you should engage a Master Electrician to ensure your solar system is safe. If you have a faulty DC isolator, at best your system will not be producing any power, and at worst your home and family could be at serious risk.”
Mr Richards said it was sensible for homeowners to have their solar systems checked from time to time to ensure they were operating safely and with maximum output.
“When you’re not looking at it every day, it’s easy to forget that you have a solar power system on your roof. But it’s generating electricity and it is exposed to the elements, so it should be checked occasionally by an expert.”
