Electrical Licensing

Following the independent review of Queensland’s electrical licensing framework, new eligibility requirements for qualified technical person (QTP) and qualified business person (QBP) were introduced for Queensland electrical contractor licences. The new requirements commenced on 1 July 2018 and transitions were available until 31 December 2018.

Electricians must have an electrical contractor licence to provide electrical work for others as a sole trader, in partnership or corporation. To obtain and/or maintain an electrical contractor licence a business needs:

  • at least one qualified technical person who can perform and supervise the electrical work
  • at least one qualified business person.

They can be the same person and both are endorsed on the electrical contractor licence.


Qualified Technical Person

QTP nominees must hold a current Queensland electrical mechanic work licence and must have completed, within the last three years:

  • UEENEEG197A – Apply currency of safe working practices and compliance verification of electrical installations
  • UEENEEG122A – Conduct Compliance inspection of single phase LV electrical installations, AND
  • UEENEEG123A – Conduct compliance inspection of LV electrical installations with demand exceeding 100 A per phase

Qualified Business Person

QBP nominees must have completed within the last three years:

  • UEENEEE101A – Apply Occupational Health and Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace AND
  • UEENEEG175A – Develop compliance policies and plans to conduct an electrical contracting business.

and either:

  • BSBSMB401A – Establish legal and risk management requirements of small business or approved equivalent (within the last three years), OR
  • an Australian business qualification at Diploma level or higher (eg. Bachelor of Business)regardless of when the qualification was obtained.
