The Australian Government has confirmed an extension of its financial incentive program for housing and new energy sector apprentices.
Under the continuation of the scheme:
-
- Employers will remain eligible for a $5,000 payment per apprentice
- Apprentices themselves will continue to receive $10,000 in support
This extension provides certainty for businesses planning intakes for the year ahead and offers ongoing assistance with the upfront costs of engaging new apprentices.
However, while the funding is appreciated, the support offered is just a drop in the ocean compared to the financial and non-financial costs employers absorb in training apprentices. Members have previously noted that day-to-day supervision, training time, course fees and administrative requirements all add up and put a strain on the financial viability of the business.
Small businesses are the primary employers of new apprentices across the electrical industry. Ongoing support for these businesses is an important part of building and sustaining the skilled workforce needed to meet growing demand.
We will continue to advocate for increased funding support on behalf of our members.
