The Queensland Government has launched its Supercharged Solar for Renters program, expanding access to cheap, reliable rooftop solar for tenants; a cohort historically locked out of the solar market.

Under the scheme, eligible landlords can access a $3,500 rebate to install rooftop solar on rental properties, with approximately 6,500 households expected to benefit. The program applies to detached homes, townhouses and duplexes, and is initially limited to properties rented at $1,000 per week or less.

Tenants remain one of the most disadvantaged groups in accessing solar. Unlike homeowners, renters cannot easily install rooftop systems, and landlords have limited incentive to invest in assets from which they receive little direct benefit.

Key Information for Installers
It is critical to note that the landlord, not installers or retailers, must apply for the rebate, and no installation may occur before conditional approval is issued.

All installations must be performed by appropriately licensed and qualified professionals:

  • Installers must hold a current Queensland electrical contractor licence
  • Electricians must hold a current Queensland open electrical work licence
  • Installers must hold SAA accreditation

MEA Contribution

MEA participated directly in the consultation process shaping the installation requirements for the program. We appreciate the Queensland Government’s collaboration and look forward to continuing to support reforms that expand small-scale energy generation and storage for Queensland households and small businesses.
