The Skills Tasmania Apprenticeships Team is undertaking spot checks of training contracts to confirm the relevance between a proposed learner’s current role and the qualification intended to be undertaken as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship.

The role that the proposed learner is currently undertaking must be able to provide sufficient on-the-job exposure to the skills required to competently achieve the qualification. Employers, RTOs and Apprentice Connect Providers should ensure that there is demonstratable connection between the learner’s current role and the qualification.

Questions to ask in relation to whether a training contract is the appropriate way to learn include:

  • What is the proposed learner’s role and responsibilities and how does the qualification align with the role and responsibilities?
  • How much time does the proposed learner spend on the roles and responsibilities relating to the qualification?
  • How many hours per week will the learner undertake training and assessment relating to this qualification?
  • Who will their supervisor be and are they appropriately qualified to assist and guide the learner to develop the skills required by the qualification?

Where training is primarily for broader or future skill development, employers and RTOs should consider alternative funding options.
