Master Electricians Australia (MEA) welcomes the Queensland Government’s commitment to significant reforms strengthening safeguards and accountability across its industrial relations and workers’ compensation frameworks.
MEA CEO, Ms Kate Raymond, said the review of the Industrial Relations Act 2016 and Workers Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 have both presented an important opportunity to restore confidence, improve productivity and protect small businesses from disproportionate costs and liabilities.
“Fair and reasonable protections for workers are essential, but they must be accompanied by equally reasonable safeguards for employers. We need a system that fairly balances protections with obligations and costs,” Ms Raymond said.
“Our members are concerned about the recent dramatic increases in psychological injury claims, lack of fraud prevention and the costs these impose on small business employers. We welcome the measures agreed to by the Government to apply greater rigour to the assessment of claims which would otherwise result in higher policy costs for everyone.”
MEA has been advocating for the Queensland Government to prioritise targeted reforms that strengthen transparency, accountability and enforcement without compromising legitimate worker protections.
“Getting the balance right will deliver greater certainty for employers, meaningful protections for workers and a more productive and sustainable Queensland economy,” Ms Raymond concluded.
