Important Reminder: from 1 July 2026, all Certificates of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) must be submitted through the Building Commission NSW (BCNSW) eCert Portal. PDF and paper forms will no longer be accepted.
All CCEWs must be submitted within 7 days of testing electrical work.
Note: CCEW and the eCert portal are a NSW-specific requirement, tied to where the work is performed, not where your business is based. If you're located outside NSW but take on jobs within NSW, this still applies to you, and you'll need an eCertportal registration to issue a compliant CCEW for that work. If you don't do work in NSW, your home state has its own certification process and this section won't apply to you.
We encourage members who have not yet registered, to do so immediately ahead of the deadline. Access registrations here.
About the Portal
The new system is designed to streamline compliance and improve record-keeping, allowing electricians to:
- Submit certificates on the go from any device
- Automatically share certificates with customers, electricity suppliers and Building Commission NSW
- Maintain a record of all past certificate submissions
- The employer can track completed CCEWs as they will automatically appear in their portal account. Note: The worker needs to click "yes" to sending a copy to their employer in the form.
Importantly, registrations must be completed by individuals — company registrations will not be accepted.
Resources
To support the transition, BCNSW has developed the following resources:
Monitoring and Compliance
BCNSW has made clear that compliance will be actively monitored and enforced once the mandatory commencement date takes effect.
MEA's Advocacy
MEA has been at the forefront of advocating for a practical and seamless online certification system for electrical contractors. Through strong engagement with BCNSW, MEA successfully secured key improvements for industry, including:
- Employer notifications when employees submit CCEWs
- API integration, enabling eligible businesses to connect their own systems and software directly with the BCNSW eCert Portal
The API will allow businesses to send the data needed to generate Certificates of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) directly from their business system to the BCNSW eCert portal. Find out more about eligibility for API integration here.
MEA thanks BCNSW for its proactive and constructive engagement in responding to industry feedback and delivering practical outcomes for electrical contractors.
Other Key Changes
- Smart Meter Tool – From 1 March 2026, the existing Smart Meter Tool commenced being phased out, meaning meter installers are no longer required to submit information through that platform.
- CER Installer Portal – From mid-2026, registered installers using the NSW Consumer Energy Resources (CER) Installer Portal will be able to submit CCEWs for relevant new and upgraded battery and solar installations directly through that portal, removing the need for duplicate submission via the BCNSW eCert Portal.
