Venergy Solar Australia, Prince Alfred College Sustainable Energy Project
(SA/NT)

The Prince Alfred College Sustainable Energy Project, executed by Venergy Solar Australia, aimed to transform the school’s energy consumption through advanced solar power systems. Venergy installed Trina 500W monocrystalline panels and Sungrow inverters across five buildings, enhancing the school’s capacity with an additional 385kW of solar power. The project resulted in a 35.1% reduction in annual energy consumption and an estimated yearly reduction of 21,319 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. This initiative not only significantly lowered the college’s energy costs but also supported Australia’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. The project earned the Gold Winner award in the “Discover the Beauty of Solar” competition, highlighting its innovation and environmental impact.

Since co-founding M2 Electrical Pty Ltd in 2014, CEO Mia Graham has been the driving force behind its success. Under her leadership, M2 Electrical has grown to a team of 60 and achieved significant milestones. Her vision, sharp business sense, and unwavering commitment to industry leadership positions M2 Electrical to navigate industry challenges with strength and resilience. Mia’s contributions include pioneering gender diversity within the company, appointing women to operations management and key roles, and championing the adoption of innovative systems and technology to streamline operations, improve compliance, and boost employee engagement. Mia’s qualifications in Occupational Therapy, Work Health and Safety, and Business equip her with a unique and valuable skillset. Clean Energy Project of the Year

MyEnergy Engineering, HRES South Ocean Lodge 2.0 – Kangaroo Island
(SA/NT)

The Southern Ocean Lodge HRES 2.0 project on Kangaroo Island aimed to develop a Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) to significantly reduce reliance on traditional fuel generators. MyEnergy Engineering installed a 599.85kW PV system, 560kWh of Redflow zinc-bromine flow batteries, and advanced Victron and Fronius inverters to achieve 60% renewable energy coverage for the lodge. Despite challenges such as severe weather, logistical limitations, and technical issues, the project was completed successfully, providing reliable and sustainable energy. This innovative project not only enhances the lodge’s sustainability but also sets a benchmark for renewable energy utilization in remote hospitality operations, highlighting advanced energy storage and efficient backup power management.


Apprentice of the Year Award (First and Second Year)

Riley Gordon, Britton Electrical Solutions (VIC)

Riley Gordon, a second-year apprentice at Britton Electrical Solutions, is a third-generation electrician inspired by his family’s legacy. Exposed to the trade from an early age, Riley’s passion for the electrical field was ignited by the skills and expertise of his father and grandfather. Known for his advanced tool handling and ability to read complex plans, Riley has quickly adapted to various tasks and projects. His growth has been significantly influenced by mentors who provided valuable guidance, allowing him to showcase his talents and develop a strong foundation. Riley aims to eventually run his own electrical contracting business or manage an existing one, contributing to the industry’s growth and success.


Electrician (Tradie) of the Year

Alex Annis, Response Electricians  (WA)

Alex Annis, an electrician and refrigeration mechanic at Response Electricians, has been a qualified electrician since January 2020. His expertise spans electrical safety, complex installations, and fault finding. Alex excels in mentoring and training colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous learning. He thrives on solving intricate electrical problems and takes pride in restoring functionality and peace of mind to his clients. One of his significant career accomplishments includes leading a complex multi-level residential apartment project involving power and air-conditioning upgrades, which six other contractors had declined. Alex’s long-term aspirations include continuous learning and mentoring the next generation of electricians, aiming to create a positive impact on the industry. He prioritises safety through strict protocols and open communication within his team, leading by example.

Kuga Electrical, University of Sydney – Campus Wide Solar Project  (VIC)

Kuga Electrical executed the Monash University Solar Carport Project in Clayton, Victoria, valued at $2.6 million. The project involved installing a 723kW DC solar system using 1680 Trina Bi-facial N-type panels and 5x110kVA SMA CORE2 STP 110-60 inverters. This advanced setup included a custom-built solar carport structure, carpark space remarking, CCTV, access control, security for the electrical shed, and integration into the university’s BMS system. Despite challenges in panel selection and tight deadlines, the project was completed efficiently, delivering a high-quality, energy-efficient solution that aligns with Monash University’s sustainability goals.

Response Electricians has been a leading provider of electrical services in Western Australia since 2009. Founded by Greg Allan, the company has built a solid reputation for its comprehensive service offering, covering everything from routine maintenance to complex installations. Known for their rapid response time and “can-do” attitude, Response Electricians tackle large or seemingly impossible jobs with urgency and efficiency. Their customer-centric approach is reflected in a client base of over 12,000 and an impressive completion rate of 350 jobs per week. With offices in Perth CBD and Osborne Park, their Osborne Park facility serves as a culture hub for training and staff events. Harry Hoffmann, Foster’s Services (NQ)

Harry Hoffmann, a third-year apprentice at Foster’s Services, transitioned from a retail career to the electrical trade as a mature-age apprentice. Known for his reliability and eagerness to learn, Harry has excelled in his apprenticeship, particularly through his involvement in the Path West essential services upgrade program. Here, he played a key role in installing HV/LV services and essential services distribution boards. Harry’s dedication to doing the job correctly, his planning and communication skills, and his willingness to help beyond standard hours have been crucial to his success. His long-term goal is to become a well-versed electrician and mentor other apprentices in the trade.

Founded in May 2017 by Brent and Chris, All Whitsunday Electrical was created in response to the growing need for reliable electrical services following Cyclone Debbie. Headquartered in the Whitsundays, the company offers a wide range of services including high-end construction, solar and battery setups, home automation, security, communication and data, marine electrical services, air-conditioning, and commercial preventative maintenance. All Whitsunday Electrical is renowned for its customer-centric approach, achieving the highest 5-star review rating in the region. Project of the Year (Under $1 Million)

ACES QLD Pty Ltd,  Stanley Place GBRMPA Fit Out

The Stanley Place GBRMPA Fit Out project, led by ACES QLD, involved a comprehensive mechanical electrical installation for a new tenancy fit-out. The project included the replacement of mechanical service switchboards, installation of control devices and cabling, creation of water cooled package unit controller panels, and replacement of VAV controllers. ACES QLD collaborated with Schneider Electric to ensure the system’s energy efficiency and integration with the building’s management system was improved. Despite tight construction restrictions and the need for meticulous coordination, the project was completed within budget and without significant variations. The successful completion of the project highlights ACES QLD’s efficiency, technical expertise, and commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions.

Known for his strong work ethic, dedication to safety, and resilience under pressure, Jake serves as a role model for fellow apprentices. His long-term goal is to advance to a supervisory or management role, leveraging his dual trade expertise.

NQ Electrical, Home Co Building B

NQ Electrical successfully completed the Home Co Building B project in Mackay, valued at $1.6 million. This extensive design and construct project encompassed 8200 square meters of retail space, a 207-space carpark, and Tesla Superchargers. Key installations included mains cabling, switchboards, power factor correction units, transformers, submains, and fit-outs for multiple tenancies. Challenges included staffing and high-pressure timelines, managed through efficient planning and resource allocation. Innovations such as EV superchargers and LED lighting with sensors enhanced energy efficiency. NQ Electrical demonstrated strong safety and quality management, ensuring the project was delivered on time and within budget.


 

Clean Energy Project of the Year

Climatecare Electrical & Solar, Great Keppel Island Hideaway Eco Energy Project

The Great Keppel Island Hideaway Eco Energy Project aimed to revolutionise the island’s energy infrastructure, which had relied solely on diesel generators since 1965. Climatecare Electrical designed and implemented a scalable, staged solution integrating DEIF ASC150 EMS systems, Sinexcel modular inverters, Fronius solar inverters, and Pylontech batteries. This comprehensive system reduced diesel consumption by 66%, saving approximately $960 daily. The project not only met the client’s financial and environmental goals but also showcased advanced synchronization of diverse power sources, demonstrating remarkable innovation and expertise in clean energy technology.

Darcy King, a third-year apprentice at TK Power and Air, is known for his initiative, willingness to learn, and exceptional customer service. He has been heavily involved in major commercial projects, contributing to repair work, new installations, and upgrades. Darcy’s commitment to health and safety and his ability to implement his knowledge have greatly influenced his growth. Known for his punctuality, reliability, and enthusiasm, Darcy aims to complete his apprenticeship and dual trade, continuously expanding his skills and taking on new challenges.

Letteshia Glatthor, Jesse Kerin Electrical 

Letteshia Glatthor is a dedicated professional at Jesse Kerin Electrical. After transitioning from the hair and beauty industry, she began her career as a TA and soon found her passion in the electrical field, leading her to start an apprenticeship. Letteshia now serves as the Business Manager, where she has implemented new safe work practices, refined quoting and invoicing structures, and prioritized customer retention. Her efforts have significantly contributed to the business’s success, with net profits increasing by over 300% in the past three years. Letteshia manages all accounting and administrative tasks, oversees stock ordering and site inspections, and liaises with customers and suppliers. Despite the challenges of balancing work and motherhood, she has maintained a strong work ethic and continues to drive the business forward. Letteshia’s journey and achievements inspire other women to pursue careers in the electrical industry.

Recently promoted to Supervisor, Jack now oversees projects, manages small teams, and coordinates customer relations, promoting best practices and a safety-first culture. AMG Electrical Solutions, SBRC Switchboard Upgrade Project

The SBRC Switchboard Upgrade Project, undertaken by AMG Electrical Solutions, involved a comprehensive upgrade of electrical, switchboard, instrumentation, and control systems across five critical water and wastewater sites in the South Burnett Regional Council. The project encompassed three sewer pump stations, one raw water pumping station, and one wastewater treatment plant. AMG Electrical Solutions managed the RPEQ design, switchboard supply, SCADA integration, and site electrical works. Key achievements included the installation and commissioning of site instrumentation, mains and motor cables, and the integration of advanced SCADA systems. The successful delivery of the project without unplanned interruptions highlights AMG’s expertise in managing critical infrastructure upgrades.

Kuga Electrical, Trade Coast Central – Solar Roll-Out

Kuga Electrical executed the Trade Coast Central Solar Roll-Out in South Queensland, valued at $3.5 million. The project involved installing 32 x 99kW solar systems within an embedded network, integrating complex network communications for remote control. Key innovations included “Smart Solar” verification software and Metropolis Metering CTs for precise performance monitoring. Despite challenges like tenant-specific requirements and technical complexities, the project enhanced energy efficiency, producing over 4.5GWh annually. This solution reduced tenants’ energy costs while increasing Trade Coast’s margins, showcasing Kuga Electrical’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.


 

Clean Energy Project of the Year

Professional Wind Services, MacIntyre Wind Farm

The MacIntyre Wind Farm project, undertaken by Professional Wind Services, involves the installation and completion works for 180 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5.7 megawatts. Partnering with ACCIONA Energía and CleanCo, this project will create one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world. The first stage, consisting of 27 turbines, has already been completed, resulting in 154 megawatts connected to the grid. The project aims to deliver 1,026 megawatts of clean energy, sufficient to power 700,000 households. PWS has implemented innovative solutions to minimise environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency, contributing significantly to the clean energy sector.

Lachlan Moore, Raffin Electrical

Lachlan Moore, a third-year apprentice at Raffin Electrical, has a strong interest in the energy sector, particularly in renewable energy including battery storage and its efficient use. His dedication to the trade is evident through his work on significant projects such as government employee housing developments, where he managed complex tasks involving meterboards and underground electrical and communications infrastructure. Mentored by his senior electricians, Lachlan has developed excellent workmanship and the ability to adapt to various fields of work including electrical, solar, air conditioning and communications. Known for his persistence and work ethic, Lachlan aims to become a highly skilled electrician and eventually complete an electrical engineering degree to further expand his knowledge and skills.

Kevin Gawada is a seasoned electrician and electrical trainer with over 30 years of experience, specialising in industrial automation, solar and battery installation, instrumentation, and hazardous areas. Since starting his electrical apprenticeship in 1993 and becoming qualified in 1996, Kevin has continuously pursued education, earning multiple certifications including a Diploma in Project Management and Cert IV in Training and Assessment. Kevin’s dedication to quality and safety is evident in his approach to work and training, always aiming to complete tasks correctly the first time to avoid costly rework. He takes pride in mentoring the next generation of electricians, using his knowledge and experience to instill good habits and a commitment to excellence. Stuart Mesecke, a fourth-year apprentice at Electric Results Pty Ltd., initially planned to pursue an Engineering degree but chose an electrical apprenticeship to gain practical experience and “earn while he learns.” His strong foundation in physics, chemistry, maths, and engineering design technologies has been instrumental in his success. A notable project that showcased his skills was the Building Management System (BMS) upgrade at Ashford Specialist Centre, where he managed the overhaul of the existing system. Known for his work ethic, communication skills, and commitment to safety, Stuart aims to eventually run a small electrical business renowned for quality workmanship and control systems in commercial environments.

Charlee Cotter, Venergy Solar Australia

Charlee Cotter, the Operations Manager at Venergy Solar Australia, began her career with an 18-month traineeship in business administration. Her journey progressed as she transitioned from an administrative role to Installation and Service Coordinator, ultimately joining Venergy Solar as Operations Manager two years ago. Charlee’s leadership has been instrumental in maintaining Venergy’s status as a multi-award-winning company. In 2020, Sally transitioned to the electrical industry full time, after co-founding Alykan Electrical in 2017 and acquiring 50% of Speedheat in 2020, where she has driven substantial growth. Under her leadership, Alykan Electrical has expanded to a team of 12, and Speedheat is close to tripling its revenue. Sally’s dedication to health and safety, her implementation of automated systems, and her focus on team development have been pivotal in both companies’ success. Her achievements include winning the National Women in Contracting Award in 2022 and serving on the Victorian Branch Committee for MEA.
