Electrification, EVs and Efficiency: Sector Plans Released
The Australian Government has released its Net Zero Plan to support the recently announced national 2035 emissions target. The plan sets out a series of sector-specific strategies to accelerate the transition to clean energy and reduce emissions.
For electrical contractors, these strategies reinforce the central role our industry will play in delivering clean energy and electrification. They open new markets in energy efficiency and EV infrastructure, while also lifting expectations around compliance, product standards, and service delivery. MEA continues to advocate to ensure members can meet these changes and seize the opportunities ahead.
Electricity and Energy Sector Plan (EESP)
The Government will continue driving momentum away from fossil fuels toward clean energy production and electrification. Key measures include:
*$40 million to accelerate the rollout of kerbside and fast charging for electric vehicles (EVs)
* $50 million to upgrade community sports clubs by installing solar and batteries, energy efficiency upgrades and lighting, and climate adaptation improvements.

Built Environment Sector Plan (BESP)
This plan supports households and businesses in transitioning to electrification, with a particular focus on:
* Ensuring a fair and equitable transition for vulnerable groups such as tenants and low-income households.
* Recognising the need to build workforce capacity and skills in the electrical sector to meet growing demand for electrification.

Transport Sector Plan
Light Vehicle (LV) electrification has been identified as central to reducing transport emissions. Priority actions include:
* Increasing the supply of affordable and accessible EVs.
* Encouraging uptake of more efficient vehicles through performance standards.
* Supporting efficient rollout of EV charging infrastructure, including private chargers for apartment dwellers.
* Commissioning the National Roadmap for Bidirectional EV Charging.
