A major boost for commercial solar is on the way! From October, more Australian businesses will be able to access solar rebates thanks to the Australian Government's expansion of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

From October, the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) will be expanded to support solar installations of up to one megawatt (MW)—a substantial increase from the current 100-kilowatt (kW) limit.

The change will make a much broader range of commercial properties eligible for incentives, including:

  1. Schools
  2. Supermarkets
  3. Factories
  4. Farms and agricultural buildings
  5. Other medium-sized commercial and industrial premises

The expanded scheme is expected to reduce the upfront cost of eligible solar installations by around 20%, making larger rooftop solar systems more affordable for businesses across Australia.

MEA has supported call for expanding financial assistance for commercial-scale rooftop solar, recognising the important role it plays in reducing energy costs for businesses.  This announcement reflects the type of practical policy reform that delivers real benefits for both industry and consumers by encouraging greater investment in renewable energy.

The Australian Government has also announced it will request the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) to explore ways to ensure network providers approve commercial and industrial solar connections more quickly.

Reducing connection delays has been a longstanding priority for MEA, with members regularly highlighting the impact lengthy approval timeframes have on businesses and customers. Streamlining these processes will help projects get underway sooner while improving certainty for contractors.

It's an exciting step for Australia's commercial solar sector, and one that promises benefits for contractors, businesses and the broader economy alike.
