In a bid to cut red tape for NT businesses, the Territory Government has released the Approvals Fast Track Taskforce Report.

Key recommendations backed by the Government impacting small electrical contractors include:

  • Improving invoice payment times for tradies by introducing a standardised digital system for processing invoices through NTGPay.
  • Exempting low‑risk electrical work from Certificate of Compliance (CoC) requirements, particularly “like‑for‑like” replacements, so CoC obligations are focused on higher‑risk, safety‑critical work. The review also recommends identifying additional low‑risk activities that could be included in these exemptions.

MEA congratulates the NT Government on its efforts to cut red tape in the Territory, particularly by seeking to reduce the administrative burden associated with CoCs. Last year, MEA strongly advocated against the CoC changes introduced in the Territory, calling for measures to ease the burden on small electrical contractors. This announcement is a positive step forward, and MEA will continue working with NT WorkSafe on the development of the CoC exemption list.
